The Aga Khan Foundation offers the International Scholarship Programme (AKF ISP) to exceptional students from select developing countries who lack other financial means to pursue postgraduate studies. Established in 1969, the programme supports students aiming to make impactful changes in their communities.


Current Status of Applications

  • 2024-2025 Cycle: Now closed.
  • Next Cycle: Opens in January 2025 for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Eligible Countries

  • Primary Eligibility: Available in countries like Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Kenya, and more.
  • Extended Eligibility: In nations like Canada, France, and the USA, residents originally from the primary eligible countries may apply.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the AKF ISP, candidates must:

  • Demonstrate excellent academic records.
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Show genuine financial need.
  • Have a multi-source funding plan.
  • Gain admission to a reputable postgraduate program.
  • Exhibit leadership potential and professional or volunteer achievements.

Age Preference: Generally, candidates under 30 are preferred.


Application Guidelines

Applications must be submitted through local units such as the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), Aga Khan Education Services (AKES), or Aga Khan Education Board (AKEB).

Funding Details

  • Structure: Scholarships are half grant and half loan.
  • Coverage: Includes tuition and living expenses, excluding international travel and family-related costs.
  • Duration: Full course for Master’s; first two years for PhD with the expectation to secure alternative funding thereafter.

Repayment Terms

  • Repayment starts six months after graduation or study termination, with a five-year term.
  • A five percent annual service charge is applied to the loan portion.
  • Loan co-signing by a family head or guarantor is required.
